Gear up for safety and security

See

When cycling or scootering in the dark, you must have white front and red rear lights as well as a red rear reflector. You can use flashing lights, but if you are riding in areas without street lighting it’s better to use a steady front lamp.

Need a bike lock or lights?

Visit the University online store to buy a set of USB-chargeable bike lights for a 50% discounted price of £6.50. Also available are secure U-Bar bike locks for £23.95.

Be seen

It’s important to wear light-coloured, fluorescent or reflective clothing and accessories that help other road users to see you in daylight and poor light. There are many options available, from full jackets or vests to backpack covers and reflective bands.

We have a limited number of free sets of lights and high-visibility gear for University staff and students, available at various events over the year starting with Freshers’ Fair in October. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram to hear about upcoming events.

Helmets

If you choose to wear a helmet, make sure it fits correctly. We offer a £10 subsidy to staff and students purchasing a helmet at the following locations; please show your University card at the time of purchase:

  • Mobile mechanic sessions at:
    • Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Woodstock Road, behind the Mathematical Institute (second and fourth Fridays of the month, 8:30am – 3:30pm)
    • St Cross/Manor Road Buildings car park, St Cross Road (first and third Fridays of the month, 8:30am – 3:30pm)
    • Radcliffe Square (session dates are available from enquiries@ousu.ox.ac.uk). Note these sessions are for students only, but staff and students can purchase helmets here.
  • Walton Street Cycles, 78 Walton Street, OX2 6EA
