Cycling during the pandemic

Safety above all

We offer six hours of free cycle safety and confidence training for University staff and students, led by a professional instructor from Broken Spoke Bike Coop. The cycle training is Bikeability accredited. If you choose, the practice can focus on the route you take for work. You can book your training online.

Be safe, Be seen: the University offers discounted bike safety and security gear (locks and lights).

Bike repair and maintenance

The usual on-site mobile cycle repair service for staff (with labour charges funded by the University) is not currently available. Please check our bike repair and security page for regular updates.

In the meantime, the following options are available for staff wanting to access free labour for cycle repairs:

  1. Bikes can be taken to Broken Spoke on Osney Lane on Tuesdays and Fridays. For further details, please contact Broken Spoke directly.
  2. Bikes can be taken to Walton Street Cycles in Jericho every day. Staff can also use a new service being offered to key workers whereby bicycles can be arranged for collection/delivery (with or without face-to-face interaction). For further details, please contact Walton Street Cycles directly on 01865 311610 or sales@spoke.co.uk.

Labour is free for staff (although not for students), as long as you use the bike to travel to and from work or on University business. You will need to pay for any parts your bike needs. When arranging for repairs at the above locations, staff will need to provide University ID card details.

When visiting the shops, please follow guidelines on social distancing and other safety measures.

We do recommend that you learn to fix minor problems by watching these videos online.

Getting a bike to suit your needs

The University offers interest-free loans to buy bicycles.

You can also expect a discount in some local cycle shops. More details on these schemes are available online.

Securing your bike against theft

Remember: lock it or lose it!
